Investment Dictionary - Soft dollars
An indirect way many advisors are paid in commission for using the services of a particular brokerage firm or mutual fund. The brokerage firm or mutual fund company usually provides the advisor with research, software, or quotation machines that are normally part of the advisor's overhead expenses. Therefore, soft-dollar payments tend to be the equivalent of commissions.
