Investment Dictionary - Passive Management
A buy-and-hold investment strategy, specifically contrary to active management. Typically, a passively managed portfolio purchases all securities that fit a desired asset class definition. The amount of each security purchased is in proportion to its capitalization relative tot he total capitalization of all securities within the asset class. For example, a small company can grow into a large company and would no longer fit within the small company asset class.
