Investment Dictionary - Option
A device used to speculate or hedge in securities markets. Buying a "call" option gives an investor the right to buy a specified number of shares at a certain price within a specified time; buying a "put" option gives and investor the right to sell a certain number of shares at a specified price within a certain time frame.
