Investment Dictionary - Exchange traded funds
For all practical purposes, these act like open-ended, no-load mutual funds. Like mutual funds, they can be created to represent virtually any index or asset class. However, they are not actually mutual funds. Instead, these new vehicles represent a cross etween an exchange-listed stock and an open-ended, no-load mutual fund. Like stocks (but unlike mutual funds) they trade throughout the day.
