Investment Dictionary - Back-end redemption charge
Many mutual funds apply a back-end redmeption charge on the sale of units, which usually begins at 4.5% to 6% in the first year and declines by .5% to 1% per year afterwards, eventually reaching zero after several years. This charge may apply to the original purchase value or the market value when the units are redeemed.
